"your voice, your vote." and jake tapper is in

boca raton, florida, with all of the highlights from last night's feisty debate. jake? >> reporter: good morning, amy. that's right. pundits and flash polls give the victory to president obama in the third and final debate, with everything on the line. the president clearly set out not just to burnish his commander in chief credit on the debate stage, but to discredit mitt romney's. >> what we need to do with respect to the middle east, is strong, steady leadership, not wrong and reckless leadership all over the map. >> reporter: the president played that card repeatedly. >> my first job as commander in chief. >> reporter: romney seemed more cautious, with a modest goal of passing a threshold, not scoring a knockout. >> attacking me is not an agenda. attacking me is not talking about how we're going to deal with the challenges in the middle east. >> reporter: at times, he suggested his views were not much different than the

president's. a line that obama underlined. >> i'm pleased you're endorsing our policy. i'm glad that governor romney agrees with the steps we're taking. it sounded like you thought you'd do the same things we did. somehow that would make a and difference. >> reporter: romney praised the president right off the bat for giving the order to have osama bin laden killed. >> i congratulate him on taking out osama bin laden and going after the leadership in al qaeda. >> reporter: perhaps romney hoped that could take the issue off the table. it did not. >> when you were a candidate in 2008, you said we shouldn't move heaven and earth to get one man. >> reporter: romney did score some points. describing the unrest and chaos in the muslim world as evidence of obama's failures. using vocabulary worlds that were google searches. tumult. >> reporter: and lambasting the policy tour in the middle east. saying that the u.s. has been dismissive and derisive.

>> we have freed other nations from dictators. >> reporter: but the most talked about and tweeted line of the night, came as the president criticized romney for saying the u.s. naval fleet should be larger, lecturing him on the military. >> we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. we have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our military's changed. we have these things call aircraft carriers where planes land on them. we have ships that go under water, nuclear submarines. and so, the question is not a game of battleship, where we're counting ships. >> reporter: horses and bayonets, now a line republicans are using to paint president obama as anti-navy. for romney, perhaps the strongest moment, george, came when he talked about creating jobs in the u.s., pivoting from the subject of the debate. and of course, both candidates will be talking about the economy and jobs in the u.s. in this last marathon dash, 14 days, in about 8 or 9

battleground states. >> and the foreign policy on the economy. we're going to turn to the running mates. i sat down with joe biden and paul ryan after last night's debate. and i began by asking about the foreign policy issues where the candidates seem to agree. >> it's fair to say that the debate has evaporated. back when i was debating congressman ryan, there were these massive disagreements on everything about syria, libya, egypt, et cetera. and now, it's like -- i don't know. there was a conversion that took place here. i didn't see anything that the governor disagreed on. and he seemed to be desperately trying to demonstrate he agreed with the president's policies. it was sort of amazing. >> he did also, though, pivot to the economy again and again and again. saying america cannot afford four more years like the last four. >> he did. but then when he talked about

competitiveness, the very things he talked about would make us weak weaker internationally, as the president pointed out. he talked about the economy. but he fell back on all the statistics that the great recession left us with. but i didn't hear anything that would say that we'll increase our standing in the world by being economically stronger based on what he's asserting. >> the president's line on fewer horses and bayonets getting a lot of play on twitter and social media. and one said that that is not going to go down as the president's finer moments. he said it was demeaning to the military. >> demeaning for the military for the president to say the truth that one aircraft carrier is probably more powerful than the entire united states navy was back then? this is a different navy, george. our navy is superior to every

other navy in the world combined. this is a fundamentally different navy that doesn't rest on the number of ships. it rests on the total capacity. as the president said, on one aircraft carrier, we have more power than most nations have in their air force. >> his team made up for the appearance in the first debate? >> he clearly made up for that. what governor romney showed today, and i felt a little badly because it's clear he is not ready to be the commander in chief of the united states military. he demonstrated a lack of sophistication of what's going on around the world. being president requires a clear vision and a steady hand. that's exactly what president obama demonstrated tonight. and it's exactly what governor romney demonstrated was lacking. obviously, i disagree. i think this was a fantastic

debate. i think governor romney won this debate. and you know why i think he won it? americans for the third time got to see a man ready to become a great president. what they got from mitt romney, clear answers. a clear vision for foreign policy. clear distinctions on how we should go forward in this country. what we got from president obama were mostly attacks on mitt romney. that's not an agenda. and we didn't get an agenda on how we should move our country forward on foreign policy. we got a defensive -- he tried to defend his record. it's a bad record. turn on your tv. and you see that the obama policies are unraveling before us. iran's closer to a nuclear weapon. the arab spring is becoming an islamist winter in some countries. and we look weaker across the world. >> the first polls we've seen from cbs show a 30-point win for president obama. >> well, look. i think president obama basically spent half his time attacking mitt romney, not

offering a new vision. and what mitt romney said here's what we can do better on iran policy. here's what we should have done in all of the other areas. and more importantly, i think he did a great job of articulating a vision for america's role in the world, having a strong economy, a strong america at home, a strong military, and being very resolute and certain in defense of our values overseas. >> you talk about the distinctions. it seemed a lot of on observers tonight that governor romney was seeming to reach out and emphasize what he agreed with president obama. >> we agree on the decision to get osama bin laden. we agree on the transition in afghanistan. we agree to carry forward the bush administration drone strike policy. but where we do disagree is on the president's handling of iran. we do disagree with his russia policy. we disagree with the devastating military cuts, which make us look weaker, which hollow our

military. we believe a strong military at home is strong foreign policy abroad. and we never should have to speak up for freedom, democracy, for equal rights, for women's rights. that's what a good foreign policy does. that's what we saw from mitt romney in this debate, the demeanor and temperament and leader we need. >> david axelrod of the obama campaign said your state, wisconsin, is in the president's corner to stay. >> i beg to differ. we won an impressive election in 2010. we won three various recalls. the supreme court race recall. recall this summer. it's a close state. i feel good about it. i don't think in wisconsin we want to see four more years like the last four years. >> congressman ryan, thanks for coming in. the view of the campaign. let's look at this with matthew dowd. and i wonder, matthew, you've given the last two debates to president obama. but over the course of the three

debates, governor romney established himself as a credible candidate. >> we're now even. we've had three rounds. it's been mixed. the number of punches thrown. now, it goes to the score cards that the judges have. there's about 500,000 judges out there. >> only 500,000 judges. what's the one thing you're looking for in the last two weeks? >> i think how they motivate their troops and what they do with that. keep in mind, one thing we don't know. there's probably going to be an unexpected event that could turn this race in the very end. it's happened before a number of times. look for an unexpected event or moment in this campaign. >> it happens all the time. thank you very much. the rest of the top stories from josh elliott. >> we're going to begin with a developing story we've been watching closely overnight. tropical storm sandy gaining strength in the caribbean, ready to lash jamaica with 15 inches of rain. setting her sights on the bahamas and possibly the east coast of the united states. sam has been tracking it all morning. >> good morning, josh.

the initial concerns of 16 inches of rain, not just for jamaica, but also for cuba and possibly haiti, as well. let's talk a little bit. and the best way to show this is on the 3d view. watch the real development here just south of jamaica. with the big, powering clouds. now, let's talk about what steers it. this storm system is on track. there's nothing to move it away from going across jamaica, right over cuba. at that point, it's a hurricane. when it gets by, friday into saturday, about 200 miles off the east coast of south flflori, what happens here? there's some concern that between that area of high pressure and this moving front, it could get close to the east coast of the u.s. we could have a storm right in here. and that's worth watching. and a lot of folks have to have their eyes on sandy. we'll have them there so you won't be surprised by the storm. >> we'll see you in a minute, sam. the fda is investigating whether the highly-caffeinated monster energy drinks contributed to the death of five

people, including a maryland teenager. the parents of 14 annise fornier went into card knack arrest. annise had a mild heart condition. the family is suing monster, who denies having a role in her death or the others being investigated. and the search overnight for a missing 12-year-old in new jersey. police believe they found the body of autumn pasquale in a recycling container. she was seen riding her bike to a friend's house on saturday. police have not identified a suspect yet. security cameras at the venetian hotel caught the man you see there, who made off with $1.6 million in casino chips. the casinos change the chips after a theft. it's not going to work out well for him. probably not going to get much cash for him.

also, news in san francisco. despite downpours, it's a happy town, at least if you're a giants fan. the giants take down the cardinals, 9-0, last night, overcoming a 3-1 deficit in the process. and so, earn a second trip to the world series in three years. next up, the detroit tigers, game one, tomorrow night. and if you're a dodgers fan, like say somebody i know, go, tigers. back to you guys. >> all right, josh. thanks so much. moving on now to the latest on that deadly shooting at a wisconsin mall. we're learning more about the gunman who opened fire sunday morning. abc's alex perez has the story. >> reporter: this morning, we're hearing the voice of radcliffe haughton's wife, zina, describing one of his outbursts in courtroom audio. >> he pulled a gun from behind his pants. and it accidentally went off between me and my daughter's head. >> reporter: the audio was recorded as she sought a restraining order against her estranged husband october 18th.

>> i don't want to die. i just don't want to die. >> reporter: she was granted that order, which also required him to turn over any firearms. two days later, haughton had reportedly purchased a new gun, then stormed into his wife's salon and opened fire, killing zina, two other women and then himself. >> it was just pop, pop, pop, pop. it was just -- it never stopped. >> reporter: zina's long-time customer, betty bruner, was sitting in her chair, as zina pleaded with her husband to plead others. >> i think he wanted to protect all of us. >> reporter: haughton wasn't swayed. this morning, bruner says, there's only one reason she's still alive. >> because of her, that's why i'm sitting here. i think that's why there's a lot of people that got out of there alive. >> reporter: and she says she thinks the reality of all this has just not hit her yet. on a positive note, one of the four victims who survived the shooting has been released from

robert f. kennedy's son, on trial right now. he's facing accusations of harassment and child endangerment, en he clashed with nurses on whether he could take his newborn out of the hospital. john muller has the events. >> reporter: a maternity word nurse testifying that kennedy twisted her arm and kicked another nurse to the floor. his lawyers saying that the father wanted to get his newborn son fresh air. this was douglas kennedy on surveillance video, allegedly getting physical with nurses trying to take his new son, beau, out of the hospital in january. this was a subdued kennedy, outside of the courthouse. >> very grateful that the day is finally here. >> reporter: the youngest son of the late robert kennedy is now on trial, accused of child endangerment and harassment, all because of this clash. at the time, the new father told nurses, he wanted to take his 2-day-old son out for fresh air. as he headed for the elevator,

they stopped him and called security. arguing kennedy didn't have permission. so, kennedy headed for the stairwell. that's where prosecutors say things really got rough. just watch as a nurse falls back on the ground. in court monday, prosecutors told a judge kennedy intentionally kicked that nurse. but defense attorneys counter he was trying to protect his new child. >> it's been difficult for douglas and his family. >> reporter: on monday, the first nurse who talked with kennedy told the judge, quote, i didn't know what to say. it didn't make any sense for him to take the baby out for air. we don't take babies out. she called her supervisors and then security. i was trying to do anything to keep the baby from leaving the unit. but when kennedy's attorney asked if there was a policy of a father taking a baby outside, she admitted she had, quote, never seen one. nurses showed up outside of the court, wearing red t-shirts to support their colleague. >> they're doing their job. they were supposed to protect

the baby. >> reporter: outside of court, kennedy said he's looking forward to putting it all behind him. >> ready for this to start. thank you very much. and hopefully, everything will turn out okay. >> reporter: now, kennedy's attorneys argue not only were the nurses confrontational but even seeking personal gain. defense attorneys paint the nurses as looking out for the child's best interest. amy? >> for more, let's bring in "gma" legal analyst, dan abrams. two parts to this. harassment and child endangerment. which is the stronger case? >> harassment, by far. harassment isn't typically what you think of harassment, in terms of the english language. legally, it means striking, kicking. and the defense is essentially conceding that that happened. >> on surveillance tapes showing it. >> that's right. the child endangerment is the more serious charge and the more difficult charge. but as a technical matter, it's going to be hard to get around the harassment charge. look, the bottom line is, in my view, if this wasn't douglas

kennedy, there wouldn't be criminal charges in this case. enormous amounts of pressure on the d.a. to take action. it doesn't mean he didn't do anything wrong. but this type of case tends to get resolved in civil court. over money damages. this one is criminal. >> even though he is facing jail time with this, douglas kennedy turned down a plea deal to avoid court altogether. does he take the stand? >> i think he has to take the stand. it's about context. why did this happen? how did this happen? i don't think they can put on a serious defense without him testifying here. but he's got this challenge with the technical definition of harassment bauecause he is conceding he kicked the nurse. and as a result, could be trouble. >> how much jail time? >> i don't think there will be any jail time. convicted under child endangerment, a little more serious. but even there, he could probably escape with no or very small amount of time. >> dan abrams, thanks so much. we have video proof, now,

that not all criminals are masterminds. look at this man setting up a hidden camera. police say he used it to spy on women. but it helped them to catch the peeping tom. and reena ninan has the details. >> reporter: caught on camera. instead of capturing images of two female roommates with hidden cameras, police say this man filmed himself, and in the process, helped them catch him red-handed. michael steven mckenny was arrested thursday, after maryland police released this footage of the alleged peeping tom, setting up his cameras. >> what we found was the camera had been set up in june. and it was operated through a motion detector. >> reporter: in court documents, police say for more than four months, mckenny was able to capture images of the women in their bathrooms and bedrooms, in all stages of undress. even using the toilet. police say mckenny was brazen, entering the apartment multiple times during the day, to reposition his leering lens. >> he knew the young women.

he stole their keys, copied them and returned them before they had an opportunity to notice. >> reporter: watch him here, as he appears to wipe away his own footprints. >> it's not the first time we've seen it here. people are able to do these things very surreptitiously. >> reporter: women unwittingly caught on camera again and again. in tampa, florida, these roommates wanted answers after they found an elaborate camera system in their apartment in 2011. >> i just wanted to know what happened with our videos. i want to know the whole story because now i don't know. >> reporter: prosecutors later dropped the case, saying the camera never worked. in ohio, police say this man made his intentions clear when he allegedly put his cell phone under a dressing room door. the woman inside, none too pleased. >> i pushed him on the face until he went down. >> reporter: he was charged of voyeurism, but has not been convicted of a crime. as for this alleged filmmaker,

he hasn't entered a plea. but could face up to 40 years in prison. for "good morning america," reena ninan, abc news, washington. let's get the weather from sam. >> let it snow. how about a little bit of that in california. blue canyon, california, where a good hit of snow first started. we're not done with this yet. in some cases, more than 14 inches on the ground. we're going to 6 to 12 inches in the lighter pink shades. and 12 to 18 inches of snow as this cold air moves east. it does move east. this changes things in the middle of the country. minneapolis from 72 to 42 on wednesday. denver, 77 to 33 on thursday. these are big changes. you're sitting with beautiful numbers right now. kansas city will warm up a bit more on wednesday, just before that cold line comes on through. and by the way, we've got to watch sandy. we'll be talking about this every day. you see the end of the forecast track, putting it away from the u.s. but from here-north, isn't sure yet. and there's a lot of folks that would bend this storm
